Treating Dementia with Coconut Oil

DIET VIDEO: The jury is out on coconut oil for dementia. Many institutions remain skeptical, while others cautiously review clinical trials. In the meantime, people who don't have time to wait are asking about it. Here's a practical video based on the current literature. (This video does not contain medical advice. Always ask your doctor before using coconut oil for dementia.)

How much coconut oil is needed in a dementia diet? What are the best ways to include it? ( This video does not contain medical advice. Always consult your physician. )

  1. ACCORDING THE REFERENCE ARTICLE BELLOW , ACETYL-L-CARNITINE LOOKS TO HAS SYNERGISTIC EFFECTS WITH MEDIUM-CHAIN TRIGLYCERIDES (fatty acids) AS THE EXTRA VIRGIN COCONUT OIL, etc.,INCREASING THE BRAIN ENERGY and the energy to the whole body.

BUT ONLY IN VERY SMALL DOSES OF BOTH SUPPLEMENTS , AND ONLY UNDER PHYSICIAN PRESCRIPTION AND SUPERVISION.

    Based in :
Article : Carnitine Supplementation and Ketogenesis by Small-For-Date Neonates on Medium- and Long-Chain Fatty Acid Formulae , published in the Journal BIology of Neonate , 2000 ,authors Labadaridis J,as we can read that :" Carnitine is a key molecule in energy production from various substrates.Although it is generally believed that it plays no role in the metabolism of medium-chain triglycerides, quite a few data exist to the contrary. In the present study we investigated the effect of carnitine on ketogenesis in small-for-date neonates fed formulae of equal caloric value and fat content that was predominantly long-chain triglycerides or medium-chain triglycerides (46% of total fat)."
According to our results there was a statistically significant interaction between carnitine and the chain length of the administered fat with respect to ketone production.Increased ketogenesis was only shown by the neonates receiving medium-chain triglycerides and carnitine. Our results provide further evidence for the involvement of carnitine in medium-chain triglyceride metabolism."

    1. For a MINORITY of persons that can have diarrhea taking extra virgin coconut oil, an option that could be tried under PHYSICIAN permission, is to do massages in the thin skin of elders ,with the extra virgin coconut oil, that has a good trans-cutaneous absortion thhrought the thin lyers of skin of aged people. Then, extra virgin coconut oil can works not only as a good moisturizer to the skin (and is good to helps to heal small bruises, etc),but maybe can, works too as a good and safe source of ketones to improves energy to the brain and to the whole body, as we can see bellow :
      1) ARTICLE : "OIL MASSAGE IN NEONATES : AN OPEN RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED STUDY OF COCONUT OIL VERSUS MINERAL OIL" - Indian Pediatrics 2005; Authors : K. Sankaranarayanan and colleagues - From the Department of Neonatology, LTM Medical College and General Hospital, India
" Results: Coconut oil massage resulted in significantly greater weight gain velocity as compared to mineral oil and placebo in the preterm babies group; and in the term baby group, as compared to the placebo. Preterm infants receiving coconut oil massage also showed a greater length gain velocity compared to placebo group." 2) ARTICLE : "TRANSCUTANEOUS ABSORTION OF TOPICALLY MASSAGED OIL IN NEONATES" Indian Pediatrics 2005 - Authors - TKirti Solanki and colleagues - From the Department of Pediatrics, KEM Hospital, , University of Pune,India.
Conclusion:"This study shows that topically applied oil can be absorbed in neonates and is probably available for nutritional purposes. The fatty acid constituents of the oil can influence the changes in the fatty acid profiles of the massaged babies."

  2. There’s been significant coverage of coconut oil as a potential treatment for diseases such as Alzheimer’s. As a consequence, some people are now consuming coconut oil in a bid to reduce their dementia risk. Some researchers have suggested that, because the composition of coconut oil is different than other saturated fats, this might provide the brain with fuel for brain cells and potentially reduce the impact of neurodegeneration. Other researchers have suggested that coconut oil might help with the ratio of good to bad cholesterol and that this might be an avenue by which it works to reduce dementia risk. Unfortunately, these are all theories based on limited animal studies. Unfortunately, we have yet to see any evidence from controlled trials that suggests that coconut oil is a preventative measure for dementia or a treatment for diseases such as Alzheimer’s. But research is under way.

An important note here is that coconut oil is 90% saturated fat. Introducing this into your diet can have major ramifications for your health, including weight gain, increases in your blood pressure and changes in your cholesterol. Any dietary modifications must be considered in the context of your individual health status and should always be discussed with a medical practitioner.

  3. Just to clarify, 70% of the saturated fats in coconut oil are the medium chain triglycerides. Medium chains are either converted to ketones or used quickly by mitochondria for fuel and not stored as fat. There are actually a number of studies of up to 152 people showing cognitive improvement in people with Alzheimer's who take medium chain triglyceride (MCT) oil which is extracted from coconut oil.
Also, Dr. Stephen Cunnane at Sherbrook University in Canada, who performs ketone and glucose PET scans in normal people and people with Alzheimer's, has learned that the areas of the brain affected by Alzheimer's take up ketones normally, which is profound. He has also learned that the higher the plasma level of ketones the more ketones are taken up in these areas of the brain, in direct proportion. Look on www.pubmed.gov for various studies performed by various groups and published by researchers/authors that include Stephen Cunnane, Samuel Henderson, Lauren Constantini,Steven Maynard on medium chain triglycerides and Alzheimer's. Also neuroprotective effects of MCT oil during hypoglycemia in brittle type one diabetics by Kathleen Page. Larger studies are in progress and others are planned; they take a long time, which most people with Alzheimer's don't have the luxury of waiting out.
